Vivian Bull Music Center
Overview
William Campbell is an award-winning composer, pianist, and educator whose work centers emotional clarity, thoughtful craft and human connection. He “embraces a mindset of possibility” (Oregon ArtsWatch), creating emotive and richly dimensional music that elevates listeners with its prismatic beauty. Throughout his catalog of film, electronic, symphonic, chamber, choral and solo work, Campbell retains an expansive style informed by atmospheric post-minimalism that maximizes variations of shape and tone to resplendent effect.
Teaching and mentorship
As department chair, he is committed to building a collaborative, student-centered department that values curiosity, rigor and creative risk-taking. William’s teaching emphasizes deep listening, reflection and helping students translate personal expression into clear musical ideas. William works closely with students to help them develop confidence, self-awareness and practical creative tools. His approach is guided rather than prescriptive, supporting students as they learn to navigate both the emotional and technical sides of making music. He values one-on-one mentorship and encourages students to integrate what they are learning across disciplines, preparing them for flexible, real-world creative careers.
